Diamond dress rings: The Crown Jewels of Hollywood

14/12/2011

An auction including a wide collection of diamond dress rings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and diamond earrings all belonging to the late Elizabeth Taylor was held yesterday at Christie’s in New York, the auction broke the world record for a single owner jewellery auction. In total there was 80 pieces of jewellery in the auction, the collection had been named the ‘Crown jewels of Hollywood’, the auction was estimated to bring approximately £12.9 million, it actually brought a grand total of £74 million. The previous world record for a single owner jewellery auction was set in 1987 when the Duchess of Windsor’s collection was auctioned in Geneva.

The star of the evening was the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, a 33.29 carat asscher-cut diamond dress ring given to her by Richard Burton in 1968. She wore it nearly every day. It was expected to fetch £1.6 million-£2.2 million but it sold for a massive £5,643,840, the ring was purchased by a private buyer from Asia. However the piece that sold for the highest price was the necklace known as the ‘La Peregrina’ which incorporates a huge 16th century 50.6 carat pearl which was owned previously by royalty including Queen Mary I given to her by husband King Philip II of Spain. Part of the proceeds from the auction will go to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which she established in 1991 to help people living with AIDS.
